XAVIER SIMS SENTENCED FOR MAKING BOMB THREAT TO COLQUITT COUNTY, GEORGIA SCHOOL

Michael J. Moore, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, announced that on July 16, 2012, Xavier L. Sims, age 25, of Doerun, Georgia, was sentenced today before Senior United States District Judge Hugh Lawson, in Valdosta, Georgia, to serve thirty (30) months imprisonment followed by three (3) years supervised release, and a $100.00 mandatory assessment fee.

Mr. Sims pled guilty on March 27, 2012, to charges of making a bomb threat in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 844(e).  Sims admitted that on August 3, 2011, he called the Colquitt County, Georgia 911 Center and stated that he had placed a bomb in an unnamed Colquitt County school, thereby threatening to kill and injure students and employees of the Colquitt County School District and to unlawfully damage and destroy the unnamed school building using an explosive.  Although it was eventually determined that Sims never actually placed a bomb in a school building, all Colquitt County schools were evacuated for the day for safety reasons as a result of the bomb threat call.

“Mr. Sims not only put the safety of our law enforcement officers and children at risk, he caused the waste of precious public safety resources,” said U.S. Attorney Moore.

The case was investigated by the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Moultrie Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.  Assistant United States Attorney Robert D. McCullers prosecuted the case for the government.
