A felon who possessed three handguns was sentenced today to more than nine and one-half years in federal prison.

Dustin Haggstrom, 27, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after a November 24, 2009, guilty plea to one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.

On February 21, 2009, Haggstrom’s Cedar Rapids apartment was searched. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found, and a loaded .22 handgun was recovered from a bathroom toilet tank. Haggstrom also had a handgun holster in his bedroom. In an interview, he said he had possessed a Bersa .380 about three months earlier and the holster was for the .380. Haggstrom possessed another handgun in April 2009. Haggstrom had prior Tennessee felony convictions for Robbery and Reckless Endangerment.

Haggstrom was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Haggstrom was sentenced to 115 months’ imprisonment, and a special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Haggstrom is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Mason City Police Department.
