Mason City Man Arrested On Federal Ammunition Charge
Contact: Peter Deegan
Brandon Snater, age 29, from Anamosa, Iowa, was arrested yesterday and appeared in federal court today on a charge of being a domestic violence misdemeanant in possession of ammunition. The charge is contained in an Indictment filed on July 28, 2010, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids. Snater is being held in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for August 6, 2010, at noon.
The Indictment alleges that, on or about April 3, 2010, Snater possessed 1 round of 9mm ammunition, 16 rounds of .410 gauge ammunition, and 1 round of 12 gauge ammunition after he had been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence (Domestic Assault – 2nd Offense) on February 26, 2010.
Under federal law, it is illegal for someone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to possess a firearm or ammunition. Iowa enacted a similar law effective July 1, 2010.
Snater’s trial is set for October 4, 2010. If convicted, he faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Mason City Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
