A man with a domestic abuse conviction who tried to sell a stolen shotgun was sentenced today to 2 years in federal prison.

Jamie Goad, 21, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after a July 20, 2010, guilty plea to one count of being a domestic violence misdemeanant in possession of a shotgun.

Information disclosed in court showed Goad had been convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury (Domestic Abuse) in Linn County, Iowa, on April 15, 2009. Late on the night of April 8, 2010, Cedar Rapids police officers were looking for Goad on a probation violation warrant. Shortly after midnight, on April 9, 2010, a caller told officers Goad was in an apartment the officers had been watching and said Goad earlier had tried to sell the caller a shotgun. Officers found a shotgun under two of Goad’s sweatshirts in a garage for the apartment. The shotgun had been stolen in a Cedar Rapids burglary on March 30, 2010.

Goad was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Goad was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Goad is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
