
coggon man pleads guilty to possessing child pornography

A man who had child pornography on his computer pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
Theodore Joseph Schaefer, age 36, from Coggon, Iowa, was convicted of two counts of possessing child pornography.
In a plea agreement, Schaefer admitted that, on June 17, 2010, and July 21, 2010, he possessed computer images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Some images involved prepubescent children engaged in sadistic sexual conduct including bondage.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Schaefer was taken into custody by the United States Marshal after the guilty plea and will remain in custody pending sentencing. Schaefer faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, $200 in special assessments, and supervised release following any imprisonment for at least 5 years and up to life. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan and was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
