Alfredo Perez-Saavedra, 30, from Dubuque, Iowa, has been charged with document fraud. The charge is contained in a Complaint filed today in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

The Complaint alleges that, on or about February 18, 2010, Perez-Saavedra knowingly possessed a counterfeit resident alien card. A resident alien card is a document used for entry into or as evidence of authorized stay or employment in the United States by a foreign national.

If convicted, Perez-Saavedra faces a possible maximum sentence of 5 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

Perez-Saavedra was arrested February 18 in Dubuque, appeared today in federal court in Cedar Rapids, and was held without bond. Perez-Saavedra’s next appearance for a preliminary hearing is set for March 1, 2010.

As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean R. Berry and was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Dubuque Police Department, and the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office.
