A man convicted of three methamphetamine and marijuana crimes was sentenced February 19, 2010, to more than 12 years in federal prison.
David Brasel, 28, from Humboldt, Iowa, received the prison term after a November 9, 2009, guilty plea to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine and marijuana. Brasel was previously convicted of possession of methamphetamine and possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine on August 2, 2004, in Crawford County, Iowa, District Court.
At the guilty plea, Brasel admitted that, from 2008 through April 2009, he was involved in a conspiracy to distribute more than 15 kilograms of methamphetamine in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and the surrounding area. On February 24, 2009, officers executed a search warrant at Brasel’s girlfriend’s residence in Fort Dodge. Officers seized $3000 and approximately one pound of “ice” methamphetamine hidden in the engine block of Brasel’s truck. The same day, officers executed an additional search warrant at Brasel’s residence in Livermore, Iowa, and seized approximately two pounds of high-grade marijuana hidden in the back of a television.
Brasel was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Brasel was sentenced to 150 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $300 was imposed. He must also serve a 10-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Brasel is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
