
watkins felonb pleads guilty to gun charge

A man who was on probation for felony drunk driving and who possessed guns and ammunition pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
Jeremy Franzen, 33, from Watkins, Iowa, was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.
Information disclosed in court showed Franzen was convicted of OWI 3rd in Benton County, Iowa, on March 22, 2007. On October 23, 2009, probation officers did a check on Franzen at his home. Officers found three firearms in Franzen’s home and one in his vehicle. The officers also found ammunition for the guns.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Franzen remains free on bond previously set pending sentencing. Franzen faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.
