domestic abuser with gun pleads guilty

A man with a domestic abuse conviction who tried to sell a stolen shotgun pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Jamie Goad, 20, from Cedar Rapids, was convicted of one count of being a domestic violence misdemeanant in possession of a shotgun.

Information disclosed in court showed Goad had been convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury (Domestic Abuse) in Linn County, Iowa, on April 15, 2009. Late on the night of April 8, 2010, Cedar Rapids police officers were looking for Goad on a probation violation warrant. Shortly after midnight, on April 9, 2010, a caller told officers Goad was in an apartment the officers had been watching and said Goad earlier had tried to sell the caller a shotgun. Officers found a shotgun under two of Goad’s sweatshirts in a garage for the apartment. The shotgun had been stolen in a Cedar Rapids burglary on March 30, 2010.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Goad remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Goad faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
