
sioux city man pleads guilty to meth conspiracy

A man who conspired to distribute methamphetamine in northwest Iowa pled guilty on July 20, 2010, in federal court in Sioux City.
Timothy Koons, 51, from Sioux City, Iowa, was convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Koons was previously convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa on August 31, 2001.
At the plea hearing, Koons admitted his involvement in a conspiracy that distributed at least two pounds of methamphetamine in the Cherokee County, Iowa, area from about February 2010 through April 2010. On April 14, 2010, law enforcement officers stopped the vehicle Koons was driving. Officers searched Koons’ vehicle and seized approximately one pound of methamphetamine.
Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Koons remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. On each conviction, Koons faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, an $8,000,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 10 years up to life of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Cherokee Police Department, Denison Police Department, Estherville Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
