Contact: Peter Deegan
A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico was sentenced on June 23, 2010, to over five years in federal prison.
Marcos Antonio Ramos-Jimenez, age 26, from Mexico, received the prison term after a March 5, 2010, guilty plea to one count of illegally re-entering the United States after being deported as a felon.
At the guilty plea, Ramos-Jimenez admitted he had re-entered the United States from Mexico on September 15, 2009, after being deported September 2, 2009. The deportation was the result of a probation violation in Minnesota when he was sentenced to be imprisoned one year and one day on a forgery conviction from April 2007.
Ramos-Jimenez was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Ramos-Jimenez was sentenced to 63 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Ramos-Jimenez is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard L. Murphy and investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
