Mexican man pleads guilty to illegal re-Entry

A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico pled guilty on June 18, 2010, in federal court in Sioux City.

Robert Benavides-Sanchez, age 40, from Sioux City, Iowa, was convicted of one count of illegal re-entry.

At the plea hearing, Benavides-Sanchez admitted he was an illegal alien from Mexico present in the United States without permission. He had been previously removed on July 7, 1997. On May 11, 2010, Benavides-Sanchez was arrested by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and charged with domestic abuse.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Benavides-Sanchez remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Benavides-Sanchez faces up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, a $100 special assessment, and up to 1 year of supervised release.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
