Contact: Peter Deegan
Two men who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico pled guilty on June 22, 2010, in federal court in Sioux City.
Juan Rodriguez-Gonzalez, age 26, and Hugo Zamora-Rodriguez, age 28, both from Springfield, Missouri, were each convicted of one count of illegal re-entry.
At the plea hearings, Rodriguez-Gonzalez and Zamora-Rodriguez admitted they were illegal aliens present in the United States without permission. On April 7, 2010, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents received information from the Iowa DOT about a truck containing five possible illegal aliens and a US citizen driver at a weigh station in Salix, Iowa. Rodriguez-Gonzalez and Zamora-Rodriguez were two of the occupants and admitted they were citizens of Mexico with no right to be in the United States. Rodriguez-Gonzalez previously had been deported on June 29, 2007, and Zamora-Rodriguez previously had been deported on November 20, 2001.
Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after presentence reports are prepared. Both men remain in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. They face up to 2 years’ imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, a $100 special assessment, and up to 1 year of supervised release.
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and were investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
