truck driver convicted for failing to register as sex offender

A Cedar Rapids trucking company driver who failed to register as a sex offender pled guilty on March 1, 2010, in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Stephen Smith, age 54, from Zion, Illinois, was convicted of one count of failure to register as a sex offender.

At the plea hearing, Smith admitted he was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act because he was convicted in Illinois on May 15, 2006, of Criminal Sexual Abuse. Smith admitted that when he traveled to Iowa in 2008, he knowingly failed to register in Iowa as a sex offender.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Smith remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Smith faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and at least 5 years to life of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys C.J. Williams and Janet Petersen and was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
