Fort Dodge Felon Pleads Guilty To illegally possessing firearms and ammunition

A felon who possessed firearms and ammunition pled guilty March 29, 2010, in federal court in Sioux City.

Jason Lee Konvalinka, 28, from Fort Dodge, Iowa, was convicted of possessing 50 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition, a Smith & Wesson pistol, a Remington, 12 gauge shotgun, and a Mossberg, 12 gauge shotgun. Konvalinka was previously convicted of felony burglary in the Webster County, Iowa, District Court on January 16, 2001.

At the plea hearing, Konvalinka admitted that, from about November 2006 through December 4, 2006, he possessed firearms and ammunition. Konvalinka further admitted he stole property, including nine firearms, from a residence in Webster City, Iowa. Konvalinka and two others divided up the stolen property including the nine firearms.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Konvalinka remains free on bond previously set pending sentencing. Konvalinka faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a special assessment of $100, and up to 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn Wehde as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation; Webster County Sheriff’s Office; and Fort Dodge Police Department.
