A sex offender who did not register pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Michael Lee Bevins, 43, from Cedar Rapids, was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender.

At the plea hearing, Bevins admitted he was required to register as a sex offender because he was convicted in Black Hawk County of sexual abuse in the third degree. Bevins admitted he failed to register as a sex offender in Iowa after interstate travel, as required.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Bevins remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Bevins faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and a lifetime term of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger and was investigated by the United States Marshal’s Service.
