A Mexican man who illegally re-entered the United States was sentenced on November 23, 2010, to six months in federal prison.

Juan Lopez-Lona, 27, from Mexico and living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after an October 8, 2010, guilty plea to illegal re-entry.

Lopez-Lona had previously been removed from the United States on May 18, 2001 and February 24, 2009. Defendant was also informally removed at the United States and Mexico border ten additional times. He was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on August 30, 2010 after a traffic stop. Lopez-Lona admitted he had illegally re-entered the country.

Lopez-Lona was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Lopez-Lona was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, and a special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Defendant is subject to removal from the United States after serving his prison term.

Lopez-Lona is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marti S. Sleister and investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
