Mexican man sentenced to 4 years for illegal re-Entry

A Mexican man who illegally re-entered the United States was sentenced on October 13, 2010, to more than 4 years in federal prison.

Julio Gonzalez-Lopez, 26, from Mexico and living in Postville, Iowa, received the prison term after a June 8, 2010 guilty plea to illegal re-entry with a prior conviction for an aggravated felony offense. He had previously been removed on January 3, 2007, and was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on March 15, 2010, after an alleged Domestic Assault in Allamakee County, Iowa.

Gonzalez-Lopez was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade. Gonzalez-Lopez was sentenced to 50 months' imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Gonzalez-Lopez is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marti S. Sleister and investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
