Marc Snively, age 43, from Mount Vernon, Iowa, was arrested today on one charge of being an illegal drug user in possession of firearms and one charge of possession of marijuana. The charges are contained in an Indictment unsealed today in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.
The Indictment alleges that, on or about January 27, 2010, Snively was an unlawful user of marijuana who possessed a shotgun, a pistol, and marijuana.
If convicted on both charges, Snively faces a possible maximum sentence of 11 years’ imprisonment, a fine of at least $1,000 and up to $350,000, $125 in special assessments, and 4 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Snively appeared this afternoon in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was released on bond. His next appearance for trial is set for December 20, 2010.
As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Mount Vernon Police Department.
