
Mexican man sentenced for illegal Re-Entry

A Mexican man who illegally re-entered the United States was sentenced on October 19, 2010, to six months in federal prison.
Jose Ruiz-Navarrette, 33, from Mexico and living in Mason City, Iowa, received the prison term after a July 2, 2010, guilty plea to illegal re-entry.
Ruiz-Navarrette had previously been removed from the United States on March 13, 1997. He was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on June 3, 2010, after he was charged in Tama County, Iowa, for a probation violation on a prior conviction for Possession of Forged Immigration Documents.
Ruiz-Navarrette was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Ruiz-Navarrette was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, and a special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Defendant is subject to removal from the United States after serving his prison term.
Ruiz-Navarrette is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marti S. Sleister and investigated by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
