A man who conspired to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it was sentenced on October 19, 2010, to 10 years in federal prison.

Gary Lee Brooks, age 55, from Spencer, Iowa, received the prison term after an April 5, 2010, guilty plea to one count of conspiring to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a public playground and one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and aiding and abetting the possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a public playground.

At the guilty plea, Brooks admitted that, in April of 2008, he conspired with others to bring methamphetamine from Las Vegas, Nevada, to the Storm Lake, Iowa, area. Brooks met with co-conspirators in a parking lot within 1000 feet of Awaysis Park in Storm Lake. Brooks was arrested as he left Storm Lake, and methamphetamine was found in his vehicle. Methamphetamine was also found in a motel room in Storm Lake.

Brooks was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien. Brooks was sentenced to 120 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was imposed. He must also serve a 10-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Brooks is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C.
