Guatemalan man sentenced to prison for illegal re-Entry

A man who illegally entered the United States from Guatemala was sentenced on October 19, 2010, to four months in federal prison.

Raul Niz-Lopez, age 26, from Guatemala, received the prison term after a September 2, 2010, guilty plea to one count of illegally re-entering the United States.

Niz-Lopez admitted he illegally re-entered the United States from Guatemala after being deported in July of 2009. Niz-Lopez was arrested in Sioux County, Iowa, on May 28, 2010, for forgery.

Niz-Lopez was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Niz-Lopez was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Niz-Lopez will be subject to removal from the United States after he completes his prison sentence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
