A Dubuque man who distributed crack cocaine near a playground was sentenced today to almost 20 years in federal prison.

Tim Anderson, age 30, from Dubuque, Iowa, received the prison term after a September 20, 2010, guilty plea to one count of distribution of crack cocaine by a drug felon within 1,000 feet of a playground.

At the plea hearing, Anderson admitted that, on January 19, 2010, he sold crack cocaine to an undercover officer. The sale took place within 1,000 feet of Comiskey Park in Dubuque. Anderson had been previously convicted in Chicago, Illinois, in 1997 for possession with intent to deliver cocaine and delivery of cocaine and in 2002 for possession with intent to deliver cocaine. Anderson had also been convicted in Chicago for resisting a police officer in 1996, unlawful use of weapons in 2004, and felony possession of cocaine and heroin in 2007.

Anderson was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Anderson was sentenced to 235 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a six-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Anderson is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement and the Dubuque Drug Task Force consisting of officers of the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office and the Dubuque Police Department.
