A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico was sentenced on February 3, 2011, to almost two years in federal prison.
Jose Sanchez-Cruz, age 34, from Mexico, received the prison term after a November 2, 2010, guilty plea to one count of illegally re-entering the United States from Mexico after being deported.
At the guilty plea, Sanchez-Cruz admitted he had been deported to Mexico on June 7, 2008, and re-entered the United States in June of 2010.
On October 4, 2010, Sanchez-Cruz was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by an Iowa State Trooper on Interstate 29 near Sioux City.
Sanchez-Cruz was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Sanchez-Cruz was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Sanchez-Cruz is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.
