A Mexican man who illegally re-entered the United States was sentenced on February 16, 2011, to ten months in federal prison.
Valentin Lopez-Lona, 24, from Guanajuato, Mexico, and living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after a September 20, 2010, guilty plea to re-entry of a removed alien after having been convicted of a felony offense.
Lopez-Lona had most recently been removed from the United States on October 2, 2006, after he was convicted of solicitation to commit smuggling. He was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations on August 30, 2010. Lopez-Lona admitted he had illegally re-entered the country.
Lopez-Lona was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Lopez-Lona was sentenced to ten months’ imprisonment, and a special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. He is subject to removal from the United States after serving his prison term.
Lopez-Lona is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marti S. Sleister and investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.
