
georgia man charged with sexually exploiting Iowa child

Gary Archer, age 28, from Valdosta, Georgia, has been charged with one count of interstate travel to sexually abuse a child and one count of transporting a child in interstate commerce for unlawful sex. The charges are contained in an Indictment filed on January 11, 2011, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.
The Indictment alleges that, on or about May 28, 2010, Archer traveled from Georgia to Iowa to engage in sexual acts with a minor. The Indictment also alleges that, on or about July 2, 2010, Archer transported a child from Iowa to Georgia intending that the child engage in unlawful sexual activity.
If convicted on both charges, Archer faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, $200 in special assessments, and supervised release following any imprisonment of 5 years to life.
Archer appeared today in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. Archer’s next appearance for a detention hearing is set for March 3, 2011.
As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan and was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Lowndes County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office.
