A man with a prior drug conviction who conspired to distribute methamphetamine was sentenced January 21, 2011, to more than 11 years in federal prison.

Tyson Winters, 34, from Fort Dodge, Iowa, received the prison term after pleading guilty on June 9, 2010, to one count of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Winters was previously convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine on June 2, 2003, in the Iowa District Court for Hardin County.

At the plea hearing, Winters admitted he conspired to distribute at least 1500 grams of methamphetamine from about October 2008 through February 2010 in the Fort Dodge area. On February 21, 2010, Winters possessed over 34 grams of methamphetamine that he intended to sell.

Winters was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Winters was sentenced to 140 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was imposed. He must also serve a 10-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Winters is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program of the United States Department of Justice through a cooperative effort of the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
