Toledo man pleads guilty to possessing sawed-Off shotgun

A felon who threatened his brother with a sawed-off shotgun pled guilty on January 24, 2011, in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Todd Young, 45, from Toledo, Iowa, was convicted of one charge of possessing an unregistered sawed-off shotgun.

Information submitted in court showed Young had been convicted of felony Operating While Intoxicated, Third Offense, in Tama County, Iowa, on March 16, 1995, and felony Operating While Intoxicated, Third Offense, in Jasper County, Iowa, on March 27, 1996. On November 3, 2008, in Toledo, defendant threatened his brother with a sawed-off shotgun, and the brother reported it to police. A search warrant was obtained, and Toledo Police found the loaded sawed-off shotgun under defendant’s bed. He later admitted he had brandished the gun to scare his brother.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Young remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Young faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment without the possibility of parole; a fine of up to $250,000; a mandatory special assessment of $100; and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Toledo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
