A man who was subject to a state domestic abuse no contact order and who had a shotgun in his home pled guilty yesterday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Brandon Lewis, age 21, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was convicted of one count of possessing a firearm when he was subject to a state no contact order.

Lewis was charged with domestic abuse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a no-contact order was issued on March 25, 2010. On March 31, 2010, Lewis went in to a federal firearms licensee’s store and started to fill out paperwork to buy a shotgun. A co-defendant was with him. The two left the store before Lewis finished the paperwork and then returned. The co-defendant then bought the gun. Lewis was interviewed, and the gun was recovered from his Cedar Rapids residence (where he was living with the domestic abuse victim) on June 17, 2010. The gun was loaded with seven rounds, and other ammunition was seized.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Lewis remains on bond pending sentencing. Lewis faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
