Guatemalan man pleads gulty to illegal re-Entry

A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Guatemala pled guilty June 30, 2011, in federal court in Sioux City.

Santos Lopez-Marroquin, age 25, from Guatemala, was convicted of one count of illegal re-entry into the United States.

At the plea hearing, Lopez-Marroquin admitted that he was previously deported from the United States in July of 2008, and had re-entered the country illegally in October of 2009.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Lopez-Marroquin remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Lopez-Marroquin faces a possible maximum sentence of 2 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 1 year of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
