
kansas city woman sentenced to federal prison for drug convictions

A woman who distributed crack cocaine was sentenced July 7, 2011, to 5 years in federal prison.
Shanta Brown, 25, from Kansas City, Missouri, received the prison term after a November 29, 2010, guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine and two counts of distributing and aiding and abetting the distribution of crack cocaine.
At the guilty plea, Brown admitted she conspired to distribute more than 200 grams of crack cocaine in the Sioux City and Hartley areas from October 2009 through March 2010. Brown admitted she distributed crack cocaine to an undercover law enforcement officer within 1,000 feet of Chris Larson Park in Sioux City on May 7, 2010. Brown also admitted to distributing and aiding and abetting another in distributing crack cocaine on February 18, 2010, to an undercover law enforcement officer.
Brown was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Brown was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $300 was imposed. She must also serve an 8-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Brown is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until she can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation; and the Spirit Lake Police Department.
