A convicted felon who possessed a firearm and ammunition was sentenced on June 10, 2011, to 20 months in federal prison.
Billy Jo Engelkes, age 44, from Sanborn, Iowa, received the prison term after a November 2, 2010, guilty plea to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. At the guilty plea, Engelkes admitted he possessed a shotgun and ammunition after having been convicted of a felony drug charge in July of 2007, in O’Brien County, Iowa.
Engelkes was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Donald E. O’Brien. Engelkes was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 2-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Engelkes is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
