
sioux city man pleads guilty to heroin conspiracy

A man who conspired to distribute heroin pled guilty June 22, 2011, in federal court in Sioux City.
Michael Carter, 47, from Sioux City, Iowa, was convicted of conspiracy to distribute heroin.
At the plea hearing, Carter admitted to conspiring with others to distribute heroin in the Sioux City, area from October 2010 through December 2010. Carter acknowledged he and others received heroin and heroin cutting agent in the mail for the purpose of distributing the heroin to others in the Sioux City area.
Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Carter remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Carter faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine, a special assessment of $100, and at least three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s office and was investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force based in Sioux City, Iowa, that consists of law enforcement personnel from the Drug Enforcement Administration; Sioux City, Iowa, Police Department; Homeland Security Investigations; Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office; South Sioux City, Nebraska, Police Department; Nebraska State Patrol; Iowa National Guard; Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; United States Marshals Service; South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation; and the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.
