
GUATEMALAN MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ILLEGAL RE-ENTRY AS AN AGGRAVATED FELON

A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Guatemala pled guilty on March 16, 2011, in federal court in Sioux City.
Juan Peren-Luis, age 28, from Guatemala, was convicted of illegally re-entering the United States after being deported for an aggravated felony.
At the plea hearing, Peren-Luis admitted he had re-entered the United States from Guatemala in May of 2006, after a February 20, 2006, conviction in Woodbury County for possession of cocaine.
Homeland Security came into contact with Peren-Luis while he was being detained at the Woodbury County Jail for OWI, no driver’s license and possession of marijuana.
Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Peren-Luis remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Peren-Luis faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.
