REINBECK MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

A man who possessed computer images of child pornography pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Nathan Daniel Newell, age 29, from Reinbeck, Iowa, was convicted of one count of possession of child pornography.

In a plea agreement, Newell admitted that, on July 14, 2010, he possessed images of child pornography at his home in Reinbeck. Newell used a computer to possess 5 videos and approximately 93 still images of child pornography. He distributed some of the images to others by maintaining them in a shared folder linked to peer-to-peer file sharing software.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Newell was taken into custody by the United States Marshal after the guilty plea and will remain in custody pending sentencing. Newell faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 5 years to life of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan and was investigated by the Cedar Rapid Police Department and the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children task Force.
