Contact: Peter Deegan
A sex offender who failed to register at his current address was sentenced November 21, 2011, to 46 months in federal prison.
Scott Sorenson, age 43, formerly of Decorah, Iowa, received the sentence after a July 5, 2011, guilty plea to one count of failure to register as a sex offender. At the guilty plea, Sorenson admitted that, between December 15, 2010 and January 24, 2011, he knowingly failed to register and update his registration as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. Sorenson was required to register because of his 2000 conviction in the Northern District of Iowa for possession of child pornography.
Sorenson was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Sorenson was sentenced to 46 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and Sorenson must also serve an 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. He must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements. There is no parole in the federal system.
Sorenson is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, the Decorah Police Department, and the Fillmore County, Minnesota, Sheriff’s Office.
