
Mexican Man Sentenced To Federal Prison For Illegal Re-Entry

A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico was sentenced on November 1, 2011, to 6 months’ in federal prison.
Gregorio Santana-Ortiz, age 32, from Mexico, received the prison term after an September 15, 2011, guilty plea to one count of illegal re-entry.
At the guilty plea, Santana-Ortiz admitted he had been deported from the United States on February 5, 2010. Santana-Ortiz was encountered by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) on July 20, 2011, at his residence located in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Santana-Ortiz was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Santana-Ortiz was sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a one year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Santana-Ortiz is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by HSI and the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.
