
Laurens Man Sentenced For Illegally Possessing A Firearm

A man who used illegal substances and possessed a firearm was sentenced on October 7, 2011, to two years’ federal probation.
JAMES EDWARD STONE, age 43, from Laurens, Iowa, received the sentence after a July 15, 2011, guilty plea to one count of being a user in possession of a firearm.
At the guilty plea, STONE admitted to being a user of methamphetamine and possessing a 20 gauge shotgun on April 10, 2009, after a consensual search by law enforcement officers of the residence he was living at. During the search, officers located the shotgun and items used for manufacturing methamphetamine such as lithium batteries, wire cutters, and several burnt foils used for smoking meth.
STONE was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. STONE was sentenced to two months’ probation. A special assessment of $100 was imposed.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and was investigated by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Storm Lake Police Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
