Traffic Stop Leads To Three Year Prison Term For Cedar Rapids Felon

A man who was found in a car with a firearm was sentenced today to more than 3 years in federal prison.

Tony Phillips, age 38, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after a March 25, 2011, guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On October 25, 2010, Phillips was in a car which was stopped by officers from the Cedar Rapids Police Department. When he got out of the car, officers found an unloaded .38 caliber revolver in Phillips’ pocket. Phillips was convicted in Cook County, Illinois, for felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver in 1992, felony delivery of a controlled substance in 1994, and felony delivery of a controlled substance in 2002.

Phillips was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Phillips was sentenced to 37 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Phillips is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
