Mexican Man Sentenced To Federal Prison For Illegal Re-Entry As An aggravated Felon

A man who illegally re-entered the United States from Mexico was sentenced on August 31, 2011, to 46 months in federal prison.

Jesus Velasquez-Estrada, age 41, from Mexico, received the prison term after a May 6, 2011, guilty plea to one count of illegal re-entry as an aggravated felon.
At the guilty plea, Velasquez-Estrada admitted he was deported from the United States on January 9, 2008. Velasquez-Estrada entered Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) custody on April 3, 2011, after his arrest by Estherville, Iowa, police for driving under the influence. Velasquez-Estrada was previously convicted on July 20, 2011, in Polk County, Iowa, of first degree harassment.

Velasquez-Estrada was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Velasquez-Estrada was sentenced to 46 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was imposed. He must also serve a two year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Alvarado-Huinac is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by HSI and the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.
