A woman who conspired to distribute methamphetamine was convicted by a jury on April 2, 2012, after a 2-day trial in federal court in Sioux City.

Sandra Alvarez, 44, from Denison, Iowa, was convicted of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine. The verdict was returned following about 2 ½ hours of jury deliberations.

The evidence at trial showed that Alvarez conspired to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine from about 2010 through about November 16, 2010. Evidence presented at trial showed that on November 16, 2010, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Alvarez’s residence seizing over 170 grams of 100% pure methamphetamine and $4,790 in U.S. currency.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Alvarez was taken into custody by the United States Marshal after the verdict was returned and will remain in custody pending sentencing. Alvarez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 40 years’ imprisonment, a $5,000,000 fine, a special assessment of $100, and 4 years up to life of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement, Denison Police Department, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
