A Mason City man who distributed BZP (a drug similar to ecstasy) and possessed a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking crimes was sentenced December 11, 2012, to over 6 years in federal prison.

Tommy Jermal Walker, age 27, of Mason City, Iowa, received the prison term after a August 23, 2012, guilty plea to distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Information provided by the United States at the sentencing and change of plea hearings revealed that, on two separate occasions in February 2012, a confidential source purchased BZP pills from Walker. Walker admitted he possessed a 9mm Uzi in furtherance of his drug trafficking crime. On February 23, 2012, a search was executed at Walker’s residence and officers seized 105 pills of BZP, approximately 5 pounds of marijuana, a digital scale, the 9 mm Uzi, a safe, gun case, and ammunition.

Walker was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Walker was sentenced to 72 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was imposed. He must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Walker is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers and investigated by the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Mason City Police Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
