
Wall Lake, Iowa, Couple Pleads Guilty To Bank Robbery

Jeffrey Alan Schoon, age 48, and Roxena Lee Schoon, age 40, both of Wall Lake, Iowa, have pled guilty in U.S. District Court in Sioux City, Iowa, to one count of conspiracy to commit bank robberies. In addition Jeffrey Alan Schoon also pled guilty to four counts of bank robbery and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of the conspiracy. Roxena Lee Schoon pled guilty on December 13, 2012, and Jeffrey Alan Schoon pled guilty on December 20, 2012.
Information presented by the United States at the plea hearings revealed that during the conspiracy, Mr. and Mrs. Schoon robbed four banks that were within 20 miles of their Wall Lake, Iowa home. On December 29, 2011, they robbed the Iowa State Bank in Odebolt, Iowa. On January 11, 2012, they robbed the Citizens 1st National Bank in Early, Iowa. On January 28, 2012, they robbed the Westside State Bank in Vail, Iowa. On March 23, 2012, they robbed the Heritage Bank in Lytton, Iowa. In furtherance of their conspiracy to commit bank robbery Mr. Schoon possessed a Taurus .38 caliber revolver. During the conspiracy defendant Jeffrey Alan Schoon also knowingly possessed what appeared to be a Molotov Cocktail, what appeared to be a second handgun, and a .22 caliber rifle, Model XS Lighting Rifle, Serial Number 15479 - AT.
Sentencings before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Both defendant’s are in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. For the conspiracy count Jeffrey Schoon and Roxena Schoon each face up to 5 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and up to three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. For the gun charge, Jeffrey Schoon faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years to be served consecutively to any sentence imposed on the other charges, and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of five years. On each of the four robbery counts, Jeffrey Schoon faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment; a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and up to five years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The case was investigated by special agents and analysts of the United States Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives special agents, analysts, and Troopers of the Iowa Department of Public Safety; the Sheriffs and deputies of the Carroll, Crawford, Pocahontas, and Sac County Sheriffs’ Offices, officers of the Denison and Storm Lake Police Departments, members of the Iowa Law Enforcement Intelligence Network, and the Sac County Attorney’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.
