A man who possessed methamphetamine was sentenced May 15, 2012, to more than 11 years in federal prison.

Lorenzo Alvarez-Santos, 34, from Denison, Iowa, received the prison term after a July 12, 2011, guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

At the guilty plea, Alvarez-Santos admitted that, on November 16, 2010, in Denison, Iowa, he agreed to distribute/sell about 10 ounces of methamphetamine to an individual cooperating with law enforcement during an undercover operation. Alvarez-Santos was arrested at the controlled drug purchase meeting site, officers seized about 10 ounces of 100% pure methamphetamine and $2,283 in U.S. currency from Alvarez-Santos. Later on this same date, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Alvarez-Santos’ residence and seized about 6 ounces of 100% pure methamphetamine and $4,790 in U.S. currency.

Alvarez-Santos was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Alvarez-Santos was sentenced to 135 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Alvarez-Santos is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement, Denison Police Department, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
