A man who sexually exploited a child was sentenced November 7, 2012, to 17½ years in federal prison.

Dana Gleaves, age 38, formerly of Sioux City, Iowa, received the sentence after an August 2, 2012, guilty plea to one count of sexual exploitation of a child. At the guilty plea, Gleaves admitted that, between June 2010 and June 2011, he used, persuaded, induced, or enticed a minor under the age of 18 to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing visual depictions of such conduct.

Gleaves was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Gleaves was sentenced to 210 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and Gleaves must also serve a life term of supervised release. He must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Sioux City Police Department.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
