A man who failed to appear for service of his federal sentence pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Roy Lee Turner, III, age 32, from Waterloo, Iowa, was convicted of one count of failing to surrender for service of a federal sentence.

At the plea hearing, Turner admitted that, on May 21, 2012, Turner failed to surrender to the United States Marshal for service of a federal sentence. Turner had previously been sentenced on April 30, 2012, to five years’ imprisonment on one count of federal financial aid fraud. Following imposition of the sentence, Turner was ordered to surrender himself to the United States Marshal in Cedar Rapids at 10:00 a.m. on May 21, 2012. Turner admitted that he knew of the order to turn himself in and he intentionally failed to do so.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Turner remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Turner faces a possible maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan and was investigated by the United States Department of Education and the United States Marshal’s Service.
