Waterloo Woman Sentenced After Federal Conviction For Attempting to Pass Counterfeit Currency

DAVENPORT, IA- On May 10, 2012, Rena Shannell Kirk, age 38, from Waterloo, Iowa was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment, having previously pleaded guilty to passing or attempting to sell counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. United States District Court Judge Robert W. Pratt also sentenced Kirk to serve three years of supervised release and pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.

On December 5, 2011, Kirk was arrested in the parking lot of a Davenport store and found in possession of $9,000 of counterfeit $50 and $100 Federal Reserve Notes. Special Agents with the Secret Service had arranged for the controlled exchange of counterfeit notes for legitimate currency. Kirk had agreed to exchange the $9,000 in counterfeit currency in exchange for $3,200 in genuine bills. When Kirk arrived, a Secret Service agent confirmed one of the bills was counterfeit, and Kirk was taken into custody.

This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Davenport, Iowa, Police Department, and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
