DAVENPORT, IA – On February 10, 2012, Richard Mendez, age 51, of Davenport, Iowa, was sentenced to 81 months imprisonment for conspiracy to distribute drugs announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Chief United States District Judge James E. Gritzner also sentenced Mendez to serve five years supervised release following imprisonment and to pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund. On December 29, 2010, Mendez pled guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana.

During the summer of 2006, after Bettendorf, Iowa, police seized 80 pounds of marijuana from a Bettendorf motel room, the police, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Quad Cities Metropolitan Enforcement Group conducted an investigation of the sources of the cocaine, discovering that it originated with a Colorado-based conspiracy. In the course of investigating and prosecuting several of the members of this conspiracy, investigators learned that between 2004 and 2007, Mendez obtained and distributed at least 125 kilograms of cocaine and 1,200 pounds of marijuana in the Quad Cities area.

This case was investigated by the Bettendorf, Iowa, Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Quad Cities Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Iowa.
