Missouri Man Sentenced for Failing to Register as a Sex Offender
DAVENPORT, IA- On August 24, 2012, Tommie Lee Thompson, age 25, of Joplin, Missouri, was sentenced to 33 months imprisonment, having previously pleaded guilty to failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Chief United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner also ordered Thompson to serve 10 years of supervised release and pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.
In February 2005, Thompson was convicted in Des Moines County, Iowa, District Court of assault with the intent to commit sexual abuse. As a result of the 2005 conviction and his status as a sex offender, Thompson was required for ten years to notify, verify and update his residency to the applicable law enforcement agency. Prior to September 2011, Thompson had been reporting to authorities his residence in Missouri.
However, starting on approximately September 13, 2011, and continuing until his arrest on December 16, 2011, Thompson resided in Iowa without notifying Iowa authorities of his location. After Thompson obtained an Iowa Non-Drivers ID listing his address in Burlington, Iowa, he was located and arrested.
This case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and the Burlington Police Department, and was was being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa as part of the Project Safe Child initiative.
