Des Moines Man Arrested in Alleged Theft Charge
Randall Todd Walker is charged with Theft of Walnut Trees from Federal Property
DES MOINES, IA – Randall Todd Walker, age 49, of Des Moines, Iowa, has been arrested and charged with theft in connection with an alleged theft of walnut trees located on Federal property, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. The indictment alleges that Walker engaged in the theft of walnut trees located on the River Place property, owned by the Army Corps of Engineers; from the Sycamore Area, also owned by the Army Corps of Engineers; from the Neal Smith National Wildlife Reserve; and from the Lake Red Rock property, owned by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Indictment alleges that the trees are valued at nearly $40,000, and that the thefts occurred between January and April 2012.
In addition to four counts of theft of walnut trees from the above-noted locations, Walker is charged with theft of scrap metal from Army Corps of Engineers property at Lake Red Rock. Walker also faces maximum fines of $250,000 on each of the five charges alleged in the indictment.
Following an initial appearance in U.S. District Court, Walker was ordered detained pending trial, which is scheduled for October 29, 2012.
This case was investigated by U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service and the Army Corps Engineers.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
